Matcha Latte in Amsterdam

Chun Café: Exploring a Trendy Matcha Place in Amsterdam

This morning, I visited Chun Café on Berenstraat — one of the most talked-about matcha cafés in Amsterdam. I made sure to arrive a little before noon, around 11 AM, to beat the rush. But even then, the line had already formed. I was informed that it would be about a 20-minute wait for takeaway and closer to 40 minutes to sit inside. Not surprising — Chun Café has become somewhat of a tourist hotspot for matcha lovers in Amsterdam.

The staff managing the line were kind and upbeat, creating a welcoming first impression despite the crowd. Once we were called in, we ordered using a QR code, a common setup in busy spots like this. The indoor staff seemed a bit distant — not rude, just focused — likely due to the high pace and steady stream of guests.

I ordered a Matcha Latte with oat milk and an avocado toast with egg and cheese. But let’s be honest — I was here for the matcha.

From a distance, I watched the preparation process. It looked quite proper — whisked quickly, but using the traditional method. When our order arrived at the table, it was visually pleasing, and I was excited to taste it.

Taste Notes: Matcha Latte with Oat Milk

The matcha latte was smooth and balanced. The umami was subtle, with an earthy finish that spoke to the quality of the matcha itself. The oat milk added a creamy softness without overpowering the tea. It wasn’t overly sweet, which I appreciated — just a calm, nourishing cup that felt like a short ritual in the midst of Amsterdam’s buzzing Nine Streets.

A Toast to Go With It

The avocado toast was a great match — topped with egg and melted cheese, it made for a satisfying and wholesome brunch pairing. Together with the matcha latte, it was a green, grounding combination that left me feeling full and content.

Should You Visit This Matcha Place in Amsterdam?

The experience, from queue to last sip, took about 30 minutes. If you’re planning to visit Chun Café, I definitely recommend going early. They open at 10 AM on weekdays, and by 11, the queue can already be long. It’s not the kind of place where you linger over a book or journal. It’s more of a quick experience — a place to grab a quality matcha, soak in the vibe, and move on.

But the matcha is truly worth trying. If you're on a hunt for the best match cafe in Amsterdam, Chun Café deserves a stop — even if just for the ritual of waiting, sipping, and tasting what the city’s matcha scene has to offer. Chun Café Berenstraat's Google Maps location.
